The sessions bring together leaders from a variety of industries, from architects, developers and planners to policy makers, sociologists, and anthropologists, who will discuss new forms of public space, and modes of living and manufacturing in New York City. This will be the first event in the series focusing on public space. How can our public spaces and institutions engender greater political, social, and economic equality? How can we capitalize on the density and physical proximity of urban environments to establish spaces for cultural and intellectual exchange? We hold an idea of the city as an intense and diverse hub where innovation and civic participation are driven by chance encounters and cross-cultural collaboration in the public realm. In truth, the line between public and private has been blurred by real estate incentives, public-private partnerships, and increasing surveillance. Moreover, as the cost of living in city centers continue to rise, these centers have become increasingly stratified by class and race.Join the AIA New York New Practices Committe and Arup for a half-day of workshops and participatory talks to examine the critical issues of public space, identity, and equity.Register for the upcoming sessions: (All sessions run from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM.)Session Two: Friday, October 27: New Local - Living: A/D/O WorkshopSession Three: Thursday, November 9: New Local - Manufacturing: Pratt WorkshopAIA CES: 5.0 LU | 5.0 HSWWorkshop Leaders:Koray Duman, AIA, Principal, Buro Koray DumanAnnie Barrett, Principal, Barrett Architecture StudioFrancesca Birks, Associate, Foresight + Research + Innovation, Arup Kelsey Eichhorn, Senior Storytelling Specialist, ArupSelected Speakers:Robert Hammond, Executive Director, The High LineAndrea Woodner, Founder, Design Trust for Public SpaceDan Latorre, Founder, The Wise CityNancy Prince, Deputy Chief of Design, NYC ParksMargaret Newman, Principal, ArupAngel Kyle, Founder, Play BuildCassim Shepard, Principal, SQ ProjectsYasmil Raymond, Associate Curator, MoMACarol Loewensen, Principal, Mitchell|Giurgola Architects; 2016 President, AIA New YorkJesse Shapins, Director of Design, Sidewalk LabsDavid Giles, Chief Strategy Officer, Brooklyn Public Library About Arup The preeminent provider of engineering, consulting, planning, design and technical specialist services in the built environment, Arup aims to do the best quality work across diverse specialties to deliver value to its clients and achieve a positive impact on our world.
